The Learning Sanctuary- Singapore Homeschooling!

The Learning Sanctuary was birthed with the primary purpose to provide a stress free alternative [Singapore Homeschooling] to mainstream education in Singapore. Learning is individualized to suit each and every student’s pace. In our Singapore Homeschooling System, every student is encouraged to learn more actively and independently, and nurtured to love learning that stays with them through their lives.

“The Learning Sanctuary will prepare students academically with an accredited International Christian homeschool Academy. We train them for critical thinking and biblical decision making for life and eternity.”

In our Singapore Homeschooling System, we are currently using The Accelerated Christian Education program developed by the School of Tomorrow from the USA. This program includes an academic course (with English, science, social studies and Math as the core subjects) built on a theistic philosophic foundation. The homeschooling program goes beyond simply helping students learn the academics required to enter college (ie. grade 12 or ‘A’ level). It was purposed to build a life-long burning passion to learn and grow spiritually. It has been in the US for more than 35 years and has been used extensively by homeschoolers.

“The Learning Sanctuary has recently incorporated S.A.T. preparatory course for students seeking entry into universities that require S.A.T. We have also tied up with Gannon University in Pennsylvania, USA to provide for our students an opportunity for higher education in a Tier 1 American institution”

Student counseling and mentoring also form part of our homeschooling method to ensure students perform at their best without being bogged down by problems and stresses in life.

Home schooling produces better than average students

Home Schooling’s Lessons

You say that in the effort to fund education, “there are few good options” [“Dodging Pink Slips for Teachers,” April 23]. Well, here’s one:  home schooling. The results are in after two decades of scrutiny. Home schooling produces better than average students, and now the first wave is also proving to be capable and responsible citizens. In addition, each K-12 home-schooled student saves taxpayers approximately $100,000, and you could consider it a downright patriotic thing to do. Best of all, after 16 years in the trenches, I think it’s fair to say that home schooling encourages parents, as well as children, to grow up.  Quoted from USNews.com

US grants home schooling German family political asylum

Couple who fled to Tennessee fearing persecution for keeping their children out of school win first case of its kind in US.

A US judge has granted political asylum to a German family who said they had fled the country to avoid persecution for home schooling their children.

In the first reported case of its kind, Tennessee immigration judge Lawrence Burman ruled that the family of seven have a legitimate fear of prosecution for their beliefs. Germany requires parents to enroll their children in school in most cases and has levied fines against those who educate their children at home. Compulsory Education: Exemptions – HomeSchooling…

Singapore Home-schooling

Compulsory Education (CE) was implemented in Singapore in 2003. The first cohort of pupils coming under CE are Singapore Citizen children born between 2nd January 1996 and 1st January 1997 who are residing in Singapore.

The two key objectives of CE are to give our children:

  • A common core of knowledge which will provide a strong foundation for further education and training to prepare them for a knowledge-based economy; and
  • A common educational experience which will help to build national identity and cohesion.

Children will only be granted exemption from CE to be home-schooled provided the parents are able to satisfy MOE that the two key objectives of CE can be achieved for their children.

Parents will have to apply to CEU, MOE for a certificate confirming that the child has been exempted from CE. In seeking CE exemption for their child to receive home-schooling, parents are required to furnish information on the curriculum and educational outcomes of the home-schooling programme and indicate how the child will receive instruction in National Education.

A child granted exemption from CE to be home-schooled has to attempt the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) in four subjects at Standard Level (English, Mother Tongue, Mathematics, Science) when he/she is above the age of 11 years, but before attaining the age of 15 years.

Desired Outcomes of Education [MOE]

What are the Desired Outcomes of Education?

The Desired Outcomes of Education (DOE)1 are attributes that educators aspire for every Singaporean to have by the completion of his formal education. These outcomes establish a common purpose for educators, drive our policies and programmes, and allow us to determine how well our education system is doing.

The person who is schooled in the Singapore Education system embodies the Desired Outcomes of Education. He has a good sense of self-awareness, a sound moral compass, and the necessary skills and knowledge to take on challenges of the future. He is responsible to his family, community and nation. He appreciates the beauty of the world around him, possesses a healthy mind and body, and has a zest for life. In sum, he is ……Click here to read main article from MOE….

I belief that Home Schooling could and should provide these key stages in Desired Outcomes Education to our homeschoolers as we strive towards holistic Education…
